What is the difference between Life Coaching and Therapy?

Therapy typically focuses on the past or current issues related to a diagnosable mental health issue including, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, and personality disorders, which can effect daily life, work and relationships with others. Sessions can be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed and often follow a treatment plan. These can be billed through insurance or private pay (superbills provided by Beacon Therapeutic and Wellness Services if needed).

Coaching is focused on changing mindset, behaviors and habits to work towards a set goal or goals in a particular life domain such as health, relationships, career, money, etc. Sessions are structured and time-limited and, unfortunately, not billable to insurance (due to not working on a particular diagnosis – required by insurance companies). Therapeutic skills such as motivational interviewing, mindfulness and cognitive behavioral approaches are often utilized to assist with the habit change process and assist you in working through barriers and towards the goal(s) you wish to achieve.
